About Copy Paster
CopyPaster is a lightweight browser tool for moving temporary text, supported files, and short chat messages between devices. It does not require an account. Instead, the service derives a room from the public IP address visible to the server.
The tool is intended for quick handoffs such as sending a link from a phone to a laptop, sharing a troubleshooting note, or transferring a small document between nearby devices. Text rooms support up to 20,000 characters, while uploaded files are limited to supported formats and expire after one hour.
Public-IP rooms are convenient, not confidential. Other people routed through the same home, office, school, guest Wi-Fi, carrier, or VPN address may enter the same room. CopyPaster should never be used for passwords, private keys, payment details, medical data, or other sensitive material.
Why we built it this way
Every other way of moving a link from your phone to your laptop is heavier than the task deserves. Emailing yourself clutters an inbox you will have to clean later. Messaging yourself works until you need the thing on a machine where you are not signed in. Cables need the right cable. Cloud drives need an account on both ends, and the sync finishes about a minute after you stopped caring.
Deriving the room from your public IP removes the setup entirely. There is no code to type, no pairing step, no QR scan, and nothing to install — you open the same URL on both devices and they are already looking at the same room. The trade-off is honest and worth stating plainly: convenience comes from the absence of authentication, which is exactly why the room cannot be treated as private.
What CopyPaster is not
It is not a backup service; everything is temporary by design. It is not a password manager or an encrypted messenger — for anything that must stay secret, use the private note tool, which encrypts in your browser and never sends the key to us. It is not a large-file transfer service, and it is not a collaboration workspace with history, permissions, or revisions. It does one small job, immediately, with nothing to sign up for.
