File transfers

Send any file up to 500 MB between your devices

Move documents, photos, archives, and other files directly between paired browsers, then save them before leaving.

1. Pair first, then choose your file

CopyPaster accepts every file type up to 500 MB per file. A PDF, ZIP archive, presentation, image, or file without an extension can use the same workflow. Acceptance means the file can be transferred; it does not mean the browser can preview or copy its contents to the clipboard.

Open the receiving browser first and complete the QR pairing. Leave both tabs open and keep the devices awake until the transfer completes. An offline device cannot receive a file later from a server-held copy.

2. A reliable transfer in four steps

  1. 1Open Files in the workspace and choose a file, drag one into the drop area, or use Paste file when your browser exposes a clipboard file.
  2. 2Check the selected filename and size, then choose Send file.
  3. 3Wait for completion and look for the received file on the other device. A progress indicator reaching the end is not a reason to close the receiving tab before saving.
  4. 4Choose Save on the receiving device. Confirm the download appears in that device’s download location and opens as expected.

3. What happens to the file

File bytes travel through the paired browser connection. The direct-sharing workspace does not upload them to a server file store. Received files are held by the browser so you can save them locally.

Refreshing or closing the tab clears the in-page transfers. Removing a transfer from one screen does not erase a download already saved by the other person. Download anything you want to keep before disconnecting, refreshing, or navigating away.

4. Paste and copy have different limits

Browsers expose only certain clipboard formats. Pasting a screenshot often works, while a file copied in a desktop file manager may not be available to the website. If Paste file reports that it cannot read your clipboard, use the file picker or drag and drop.

For supported text files and PNG images, Copy places the contents on your clipboard. It does not create a universal operating-system file object. For an archive, installer, or another unsupported format, use Save and then work with the downloaded file in your file manager.

5. If a large transfer is interrupted

Keep the sender and receiver open and avoid switching a phone between Wi-Fi and cellular data midway through a transfer. Closing a laptop lid or putting a phone to sleep can interrupt the connection.

If progress stops, cancel the transfer, confirm the devices are paired, and send it again. Interrupted transfers do not resume from a saved server copy. On a memory-constrained phone, try a smaller file. Only open files from a sender you trust; accepting a file type is not malware scanning.
